If it is decided that you would benefit from a procedure or operation, Mr Wood will discuss your different anaesthetic options:
- Local anaesthetic – numbs the operation site whilst you are awake
- Sedation – local anaesthetic is used to numb the operation site, and a mild sedative is given so you are less aware of what is happening around you.
- General anaesthetic – you are totally asleep during the operation.
For sedation or General Anaesthetic you should have nothing to eat or drink (
nil by mouth) for 6 hours before the procedure. You can have a sip of clear water to take your tablets up to 2 hours before the procedure. For day surgery, you should have someone to take you home after your procedure and spend the night at your home.
